K9s

Our K-9 is a full-time unit and is available 24/7. They have provided their service to various federal, state and municipal details. The services include missing person searches, narcotics, bomb, and public demonstrations which assist in the development of community policing.

“Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend” – Corey Ford
Our K-9 Unit is presently staffed with 8 handlers, 14 service canines in total to include 2 Bloodhounds, 6 narcotic detection, 6 explosive detection, and 5 patrol. The 3 explosive detection canines are New Jersey Explosives Detect and Render Safe Canine Program certified. The 2 bloodhounds are apart of the National Police Bloodhound Association (NPBA).

Our K-9 Unit has partnered with the New Jersey State Police’s “Detect & Render Safe” Task force since its inception and has responded to all requests for dispatch. The unit has been responding to requests for assisting neighboring counties since 1962 and to explosive detection requests since 1992. In 2001, two of our K-9 Unit handlers responded to a request to perform tunnel sweeps after the horrendous 9/11 terrorististic attacks.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, all 33 Municipal Police Departments and various private sector establishments throughout the county depend on the Sheriff’s K-9 Unit to search for missing persons, criminal suspects, narcotics detection, suspisious activity and conduct security sweeps.
