It shall be the policy of the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office – Crisis Negotiations Team to respond to critical incidents such as attempted suicides, barricaded subjects, hostage situations, and any other situation where a crisis negotiator would be beneficial to the safe and successful conclusion of a law enforcement objective. It will always be the goal of the Crisis Negotiations Team to protect lives, apprehend suspect(s) and assist individuals in crisis.
The Crisis Negotiations Team operates under the supervision and coordination of the Ocean County Prosecutor and the Ocean County Sheriff, and also provides assistance when requested by the local police department. The Commander of the Countywide Crisis Negotiations Team is currently assigned from the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office. The Commander, in coordination with the Emergency Response Team Commander, will initiate the deployment of other law enforcement Crisis Negotiation Teams, as needed.
The mission of the Ocean County Crisis Negotiations Team is to:
- Aid in the stabilization of a crisis situation, through the use of negotiation techniques
- Promote a behavioral change in one or more individuals
- Facilitate a resolution that attempts to avoid injury to all involved parties
- Provide intelligence to the Emergency Response Team and the Officer-in-Charge of the critical incident
